Share

Our beloved city of Fort Benton, often referred to as the “birthplace of Montana”, offers picture-perfect scenery. Included in these scenic travels is the Missouri River, the nation’s longest river. Stretching from Fort Benton, MT to Missouri, this river offers a variety of travel and sightseeing options for guests.

Let’s look further into traveling across the Missouri River in perhaps an unconventional manner: ferry crossings. Below are some highlights and tips on how to make your ferry travels the best they possibly can be.

Fort Benton, MT

Fort Benton played a pivotal role in the development of the American West. The city was established in 1846, and was a crucial trading post for a variety of people. Trappers, traders and explorers navigating the Missouri River couldn’t help but stop and rest in the historic town. The ferry crossings offered today stand as a testament to the historic legacy of this town.

Ferry crossing itself was a traditional mode of transportation back in the 19th century. It was seen as more of a necessity than a luxury at the time. Ferry travel insured individuals and their goods could make it across various treacherous waters. Today’s ferry, updated for modern convenience, allows for leisure travel to understand the history of these rivers.

The Experience

Follow the footsteps of early pioneers as you step inside the modern ferries. Witness the beautiful water beneath you as you travel, with picturesque mountains lining the waters. Bring your cameras for the greenery that surrounds your vessel!

Ferries

There are three ferries that offer premier traveling excursions throughout the Missouri River in Montana. Below are the differing options, as well as how to contact each ferry for your traveling needs.

Virgelle Ferry

Offering a free ferry ride, the Virgelle Ferry is one of three transportation options along the Missouri River. Just ring the buzzer and the Ferry Operator will come to pick you and your vehicle up! Over 30,000 vehicles have been successfully transported with the Virgelle Ferry. Starting in 1913, the Ferry offers over a century of history to you and your party.

The Ferry is seasonal, operating from Mid April to November, especially depending on the ice. Typical hours of operation are as follows:

  • Monday - Saturday: 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
  • Sunday: 9:00 a.m. to 5: 00 p.m.

Carter Ferry

Established in 1917 by Chouteau County, the Carter Ferry has since been replaced twice, in 1945 and 2004. Free of charge, this ferry offers up to 2 passenger cars at a time. The Ferry also serves as state fishing and public access to the Missouri River. Fishermen rejoice at the option to ferry out to your fishing destinations!

Honk your horn or call from a phone near the ramp to alert the Ferry Operator of your arrival. The typical season is April through November, and similar to the Virgelle Ferry, is dependent on the weather and ice.

Stafford-McClelland Ferry

The Stafford-McClelland Ferry is the last of the three ferrying options in Montana. Dating back to 1921, the owner, Jack McClelland later sold the ferry to the Stafford family. Today, it is owned and operated by the county. Scheduled from May to November, the ferry offers traveling needs for guests of all backgrounds.
